Tell us a little bit about yourself: I’m a born again Christian who worked for 22 years as a police officer in Long Beach, California. I now write romantic suspense novels, always with a police officer as the main character. I aspire to keep the reader intrigued, involved, and inspired by my books.
Who was your first Screen/Musical Crush? Richard Burton – loved his voice.
What is your personal, most effective way to get past writer s block? Just write, Now matter what, maybe what I’m writing is awful, but it can be changed. You can’t edit a blank page. So when I feel blocked, I force my self to just write.
What advice do you have for aspiring writers? Don’t be afraid to make changes, to rewrite. Accept constructive criticism and never fall so in love with what you’ve written that you believe that it can’t be made better.
What is your preferred method of writing? (computer, pen & paper, etc.) Computer. Sometimes I’ll make notes on a pad, if I get inspired, but when I start a new project, it is always on the computer.
I assume when you start a book, you pretty much have the plot laid out. Do you ever change your mind later on in the book, and go in a different direction? I change direction all the time. I am a pantser – meaning that I don’t outline. I just sit down and write. Things change all the time.
Do you talk out plot lines with others, and if so, who? Yes, with my agent, and I have a friend who is usually my first reader. Often I will run plots by her to see if they sound plausible.
Hallee and Janice
At what age did you know you wanted to write? I’ve heard stories of people who were writing stories in childhood (which is what I’d expect). But I’ve heard of others who randomly started much later in life, and that is so interesting to me! I think that I was in the third or fourth grade. I was reading all the horse books, My Friend Flicka, The Black Stallion, etc. And I thought maybe I could write a horse book. I wrote a few, really terrible horse books.
