Whole Wheat Brown Sugar Apple Crisp with Cinnamon Whipped Cream

Whole Wheat Brown Sugar Apple Crisp with Cinnamon Whipped Cream

It's apple season here at our household, and our apple tree is bursting with fruit. I was out of pie plates, so instead of an apple pie I used a square cake pan and made an apple crisp. This was so good, very simple, and so easy to make.

Ingredients

Apple Crisp
  • 4 cups apples, peeled and sliced
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon Kosher salt
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 3/4 cup whole wheat flour (I used fresh ground, soft white wheat)
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/3 cup butter, softened
Cinnamon Whipped Cream
  • 1 cup heavy whipping cream
  • 1 tablespoon powdered sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F.
  2. Place the bowl and beaters for the whipped cream in the refrigerator.
  3. Peel and slice the apples. I use an apple peeler and a slicing contraption.
  4. Place 4 cups of sliced apples in a 9x9x2 square pan.
  5. Sprinkle with cinnamon and salt, and add the water.
  6. In a bowl, mix the flour, brown sugar, and butter.
  7. Top the apples with the dough.
  8. Bake at 350°F for 40 minutes.
  9. In the chilled bowl, beat the whipping cream, powdered sugar, and cinnamon until the cream is stiff.
  10. Serve the crisp warm, topped with the Cinnamon Whipped Cream.

Notes

A 9-inch pie plate works in place of the square pan. High in vitamin A; a good source of vitamin C and iron.
