Family Favorite Steak and Gravy
- 1 pound thinly sliced steak (quality doesn’t matter here; you’re going to cook the tenderness into it)
- 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
- 1 teaspoon Kosher or sea salt
- ½ teaspoon fresh ground black pepper
- 1 white onion
- 1 can mushrooms
- 2 cups water, divided
- ¼ cup flour
Slice the meat into strips. Slice the onion.
Heat a deep frying pan over medium to medium-high heat. Add the olive oil. Add the meat. Salt and pepper. Add the onions.
Cook for about 2 minutes, then stir. Cook for about 2 more minutes, then add 1 cup water. Bring the water to a boil, then reduce the heat to low and cover.
Cook, stirring occasionally. After about 15 minutes, add the mushrooms with the juice. Stir. Cover and continue cooking for another 20 minutes or so, stirring occasionally.
Remove the meat and veggies. Increase the heat.
In a measuring cup or other container, mix ¼ cup flour with 1 cup water. When the liquid in the pan starts boiling, whisk in the water and flour mixture.
Continue whisking until the gravy boils. Boil and stir for one minute.
Remove from heat.
Stir the meat and veggies into the gravy.
Serve over rice or potatoes.
