Dehydrated Blueberries

Dehydrated Blueberries

The price of dried blueberries in the bulk food aisle, $13.99 per pound, gave me pause. Then I remembered that I had an unused dehydrator sitting on the shelf, so I bought four pounds of fresh blueberries on sale and dried them myself. I think it was definitely worth the work to dry them.

Ingredients

  • 4 pounds fresh blueberries

Method

  1. Wash the blueberries really well and get all the little stems out of them.
  2. Because blueberry skins are hard, blanch them for three minutes in boiling water instead of pricking each skin with a needle.
  3. Drain them really well on a paper towel.
  4. Line the dehydrator pans and spread the blueberries on them.
  5. Dry according to your dehydrator’s directions until the blueberries are dried. It took much longer than the book said it would, like a day longer.

Notes

Four pounds of fresh blueberries made almost exactly a pound (.9444 pounds) of dried blueberries. I paid less than half what I would have paid for dried blueberries in the bulk aisle, a total savings of $7.21.
The dehydrator was big enough to do all four pounds at once.
